The Farm

Low Fold is a working hill farm in Cumbria. Staveley Head valley had 8 farms 20 years ago now Low Fold is the last working farm in the valley.

A sign of the times, sadly making a living in hill farming is becoming a thing of the past

With aprox 260 acres of hill land (not one flat field) quality of the stock farmed is very important.

Pedigree Limousin cattle are sold at 12months old to the store trade. Bulls are sold to local herds.

Sheep are bred pure and crossed with fat lambs being sold off grass dead weight. Replacement females wintered on the salt marshes join the flock in the spring and are put in lamb in winter for lambing early April.

The land is rough, we do not have land that can be ploughed (we have too many BIG stones !)

The pictures below show the areas that make Low Fold.

Working Sheep Dogs

Working  dogs are very important on a hill farm, they are worth thier weight in gold! We have a kennel full of dogs all at different stages in life.

The Old Man is Kippy at 19 years, he still likes to keep his paws i when we have sheep in the yard helping, but he is not allowed to work the cattle (he might get hurt) so he is put to bed while the cattle are worked. He whines to be let out........
